Daniel Rivera is a New York-based Special Effects Makeup Artist and the founder and Head Artist of Memento Mori FX, specializing in practical effects for film, television, and independent productions.
Daniel’s work focuses on creating believable effects that help tell the story on camera. His specialties include prosthetic makeup, trauma and wound effects, practical blood and gore, burns, bruising, illness and aging effects, character makeup, and creature design. He works both out of the kit and with prosthetic appliances, creating or sourcing custom pieces based on the needs, scope, and budget of each production.
Daniel brings a unique perspective to effects work through his experience on both sides of the camera. In addition to SFX makeup, he is an actor, writer, martial artist, and fight choreographer, giving him an understanding of how makeup effects need to function during performance, action sequences, fight scenes, and practical stunt work.
With decades of martial arts experience, Daniel also understands movement, impact, timing, and the physical storytelling behind screen violence. This allows him to collaborate with directors, performers, and stunt teams to design practical effects that complement the choreography and camera rather than interfere with it.
As an actor himself, Daniel approaches makeup from a performer’s perspective as well. An effect has to do more than look impressive in a photograph—it needs to allow the actor to perform while remaining believable through lighting, movement, continuity, and multiple takes.
